After heading to outland and beccoming fearful of the wrath of Kil'Jaeden Illidan began a campaign to rid Outland of the Burning Legion by closing demonic portals and eventually, assaulting the Black Temple itself. When Illidan confronted Magtheridon, the pit lord at first thought it was just a test but unfortunately for him, it wasn't. Magtheridon was then imprisoned in Hellfire Citadel to be used to transform Orcs into Fel Orcs.

As soon as Illidan captured the Black Temple, he was approached by Kil'Jaeden who gave him one last chance to defeat Ner'zhul and prove himself to the Burning Legion. The Demon Hunter obeyed and launched an assault on Northrend itself. His campaign failed and Illidan was nearly killed by Arthas himself, luckily he was rescued once again by Kael'Thas and Lady Vashj.

The defeat ontop of all the family drama caused Illidan to go insane and attack the city of Shattrath, which would give reasoning for many heroes to assualt the black temple. And only after the betrayel of Akama and a sucker punch by Maiev Shadowsong would he be at last laid to rest. Illidan died by the hands of the very people he tried to save from the lich king only years earlier. They called him the betrayer, but in truth, it was he who was betrayed.
