189The Thanatos was developed during a time when battlemech development was in a new boom state after the clan war. Starcorps who had been making battlemechs for decades for both the AFFS and LAAF designed the Thanatos as a omnimech to sell exclusively to both forces. However this was not to be as both militaries declined to purchase a new omnimech citing cost and already having a number of these in their arsenals. Starcorp rebuilt the design a standard battlemech which was happily accepted by both houses. The reduction in cost and change of scope for the company also meant the 'mech was sold to other interested parties such such as mercenary companies and other great houses and periphery states.
