NVIDIA and its board partners reportedly plan to reduce prices for RTX 5000 series GPUs as early as this month. This adjustment comes due to lower "terminal sales" and an existing "oversupply" of these graphics cards in the market. This potential price drop occurs amid rumors that NVIDIA will also introduce "Super" models for the RTX 5000 series later this holiday season, which could further impact market dynamics.
While NVIDIA has not officially confirmed these price reductions, current retail availability of both Founders Edition and partner GPUs at or below original retail prices supports the credibility of these reports. Historically, the GPU market saw consumers struggling against scalpers for new releases. However, recent inflation and tariffs led to skyrocketing retail prices and reduced demand, which sidelined scalpers.
If these reports are accurate, lower retail prices could quickly re-attract scalpers. To counter this, NVIDIA has the "Verified Priority Access" scheme. This program allows consumers with an NVIDIA account created before a specific date (e.g., January 30) to receive an invitation to purchase Founders Edition GPUs directly.
The effectiveness of this scheme in a wider market scenario is key, as its current scope is limited to specific regions and Founders Edition models. Activating this program on a larger scale would be a strategic move for NVIDIA to improve consumer access and address past criticisms regarding the RTX 5000 series launch, which included driver issues, unconfirmed specifications, and limited availability.
