Igor's Lab conducted an analysis of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090's power management. The study focused on how the card handles peak power draw within the ATX 3.1 specification. This information is relevant for users with older ATX v2.51 power supply units (PSUs) who plan to use the included 4x 8-pin PCIe to 12V2x6 power adapter.

The analysis revealed the RTX 5090 can experience power excursions (brief increases beyond the 600W continuous limit) at various durations and wattages. These excursions reach up to 627.5W for 10-20ms, 738.2W for 5-10ms, 823.6W for 1-5ms, and 901.1W for spikes under 1ms. These power spikes are within the ATX 3.1 specification, which allows for excursions up to 200% (1200W) for durations under 1ms.

Power supply units meeting the ATX 3.1 standard, even those with a continuous power output below 1200W, are capable of handling these transient power spikes. However, older PSU generations, such as ATX v2.51 (from the mid-2010s), may experience Overcurrent Protection (OCP) shutdowns when faced with these excursions. This analysis provides important context for system builders, particularly concerning PSU compatibility with high-power graphics cards like the RTX 5090.
