Some of the not necessarily lethal but unpleasant events that can strike your base early on are sandstorms, which will block out the sun entirely, but max out the production of your wind turbines for a while. They also slow down your colonists outside quite significantly, so you might want to keep them inside to protect them from worse things. The game handily informs us that we can use the yellow alert for that... if we have a security center.
