Lucera: The mosaics of San Giusto resurface in the year of Lucera, Capital of Culture of Puglia.
♦️ Lucera (FG) - The SAN GIUSTO MOSAICS resurface in the year of Lucera's appointment as the Cultural Capital of Puglia.
Thirty years after their discovery, the building housing the San Giusto Mosaics was inaugurated last night, and they will be visible in all their splendor of polychromy, making them a precious testimony to early Christian art.
The San Giusto mosaics were discovered in the town of the same name, located a few kilometers southeast of the town of Lucera. Between 1990 and 1995, work was carried out to dam the Celone River; within the construction site, an archaeological site emerged relating to an unknown late Roman and early Christian settlement.
The archaeological excavations, carried out between 1995 and 1997 by the Superintendency of the Puglia Region and the University of Bari, covered an area of approximately 4,000 m² and uncovered an important rural settlement from the Late Roman and Early Christian periods. The archaeological site consists of artifacts from different chronological periods and features an incredible overlap of interventions, spanning approximately eight centuries of inhabitation in the area: from the 1st century BC to the 7th century AD.
Starting yesterday, the MOSAICS OF SAN GIUSTO will be visible to everyone, every day, thanks to an agreement with the Archeoclub of Lucera.
