Luftangriff auf Wilhelmshaven (improved version)
Wilhelmshaven is Germany's only deep-water port, and its largest naval base.
In World War II, Allied bombing destroyed two thirds of the town's buildings while the main target, the Naval Shipyard Wilhelmshaven remained operational despite serious damage.
As Germany knew the importance of the city, Wilhelmshaven was heavily fortified and was the German city with the highest density of bunkers. The city itself was additionally surrounded by an anti-aircraft belt and was protected by a large number of fighter planes. Additionally, units of the navy were ready to protect the city. This made attacks on Wilhelmshaven extremely costly.
The relative proximity to Great Britain and its importance as a naval base made Wilhelmshaven the first target of a British air raid and already on September 3rd 1939 the city was attacked. The damage, however, remained minor. During the next attack in December the German Luftwaffe used radar for the first time to guide its fighters. 12 of the 22 attacking bombers were shot down while still over the North Sea.
Wilhelmshaven was attacked several times by the 8th Air Force later in the war. In 12 attacks on the city, 2,141 bombers of the Eighth dropped 5,327.5 tons of bombs and had 46 bombers shot down.
In this scenario, the flak was largely omitted, since CMO does not yet have corresponding database entries (Flak 88). However, the city is defended by Me 109, Bf 190 and some Bf 110. The Americans use their legendary Flying Fortress and some Mitchel bombers.
Of course, the aerial photographs to be seen are from today and do not correspond to the condition of the city in 1943.
Edit:
In this improved version of my scenario, I had the planes take off from airfields in southern England. Thus the formations were better executed. Additionally, escort fighters were added. The total number of machines was increased massively.
On the German side the number of fighters was reduced. The Bf 110 had to be removed completely, because even two Bf 110 were sufficient to shoot down all Mustangs within a few seconds. Generic 100 mm Flak Cannons were added to defend Wilhelmshaven.
