Luigi in a SEGA Game?! (Sega GT)
75Just before the latest batch release from the Project Deluge team, A member of the Dreamcast prototype archival scene dropped two prototypes onto the team, one of which being an early build of the U.S. release of Sega GT.
This release has a few notable differences, beta bugs, and even a sort of "debug" menu.. but then there's a special event generator mode hiding in the game's "Internet" tab.
And wouldn't you know, it happens to have two test tracks! The first being the one of notice here, "SonyGT2" (a subtle reference to Sony's Gran Turismo 2, a competitor game to Sega GT). The track itself uses the layout from the Pikes Peak course from Gran Turismo 2, and then mirrors it so it can lap around as a circuit. But... wait, is that.. LUIGI?!
Yes, at the start of the race is a flag bearer, who happens to greatly resemble Nintendo's Luigi (of Super Mario Bros. fame). Laurent (the provider of this prototype) had tweeted pictures of this discovery before, with GameXplain even making a video about it, but since the build is available for public access, I went ahead and showcased it in action! And to show off the track itself in its entirety.
Its of note an entirely off-road track, whilst every track in the final build is on-road only. This was likely used for physics testing (as there are SEVERAL jumps throughout the track).
