Luigis Mansion 17 years later, a Luigi's Mansion Retrospective.

The premise of Luigi’s Mansion is laughable, but in a good way. You know those annoying telemarketer scams where someone calls you and tells you that you won some trip? What if they told you that you won something even less believable, like an entire mansion? No one would actually fall for it… well, Luigi did. Luigi thought that he won a mansion in a contest he hadn’t entered. When he shows up it turns out to be an old, haunted mansion. Later on in the game, even King Boo, who you find out is responsible for the scheme makes fun of them for falling for it.

Basically - After Luigi had thought he won the mansion he promptly told Mario to meet him there. Mario arrived first and fell for King Boo’s trap and was turned into a painting. Unknown to Luigi, he too falls for the trap and enters the mansion, only to be saved by an old man named Professor E. Gadd who tells him what’s happened. The Mansion isn’t real and appeared several days ago and is a trap. Professor E. Gadd has been catching ghosts and turning them into paintings for years, however King Boo has freed all of Gadd’s captured portrait ghosts, who are now taking refuge in the mansion. So now, it’s up to Luigi to capture all of the ghosts, defeat King Boo and rescue Mario.

About Luigi's Mansion:
Luigi's Mansion is a 2001 action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the GameCube. The game was a launch title for the GameCube and is the first game in the Mario franchise to be released for the console, launched in Japan on September 14, 2001, in North America on November 18, 2001, and in Europe on May 3, 2002. It is the second title in the franchise in which Luigi is the main character, instead of Mario, with players controlling him as he explores a haunted mansion, searching for Mario and dealing with ghosts that lie within its rooms by capturing them through a special device supplied by Professor E. Gadd.
