Lunar Leeper Longplay (Commodore 64 Version) -

Lunar Leeper is an action game developed by Sierra On-Line and released in 1982 for various platforms, including the Commodore 64. The game combines elements of a side-scrolling shooter and a rescue mission, set on an alien planet.

The player controls a spaceship tasked with navigating dangerous terrain while rescuing stranded astronauts. The environment features jagged mountains, craters, and alien creatures called "Leepers," which leap toward the ship in an attempt to capture it. Precision is crucial, as players must fly close to the ground to pick up astronauts without crashing or being caught by the Leepers. These creatures can be destroyed with well-timed shots to earn points, but players must stay alert to avoid being overwhelmed.

The game alternates between two phases: a rescue phase, where the focus is on collecting astronauts while evading dangers, and an escape phase, where the player must guide their ship through increasingly narrow and hazardous caverns. Each level ramps up the difficulty with more aggressive enemies and tighter obstacles, testing the player’s reflexes and timing.

Lunar Leeper's graphics and sound were considered impressive for its time, helping to create a sense of tension and urgency. Its combination of strategic movement, shooting mechanics, and escalating challenges made it a notable entry in early 1980s gaming.

Despite this, I can’t count myself among its fans—quite the opposite, in fact. While Lunar Leeper has an intriguing concept and gameplay ideas that could have been engaging, I just can’t get past the stiff and imprecise controls, particularly during the rescue stage. The ship’s movement feels rigid, making navigation needlessly frustrating and severely impacting the overall experience. After completing the first loop, I found the controls so frustrating that I intentionally lost all my lives rather than continuing.
