MADDEN 23 FACE OF THE FRANCHISE DB EP216: WHAT HAVE I DONE?!
My undisciplined style of play at the CB position although successful, footloose and free has me rendered as more of a DB, NB, or Corner Linebacker/MLB in a 5-2 scheme, effectively making it a 5-3 scheme (5 DL, 3 LB, 3 DB). It works to the tune of freeing my player on edge rushes and gap blitzes especially when against a shotgun empty offensive set or with the current state of the league now essentially defuncting the FB blocking back position and most RBs looking to help in the pass game or run the ball instead of pass protect. The 5 DL occupy the 5 OL, leaving just space and opportunity to sack the QB on almost every play, wreaking havoc to any teams standard game plan and dictating the pace of a game by allowing either a check down or an up top lob pass to most times an expecting safety waiting to dish out the punishment. A player like Budda Baker makes this style of play realistic as he almost always jars passes loose from receivers on my side as the safety help up top, and it is especially easy since most offensive game plans are designed to move you best WR all over the field and generally avoid me as I am the best cover CB in the league, so you will most likely put the #2 or #3 option on my side and he's usually not the best WR. But even great WRs have trouble holding on to the ball when the hit is coming from a great safety like Baker. The 1-2 punch chemistry Baker and I have developed worked to perfection... literally. Have we now antiquated our scheme by abandoning Baker who thus dissuaded QBs from throwing on that side altogether and served as the yin to our yang? Can we still put up the same sack totals as before? Will we have to switch schemes and abandon our brand of bully ball? Or can we come together as a team and help develop possibly a superstar x-factor in a DB up top that can play similar to how Baker played?
