In an era of generally woeful rehashes of old games, the "Definitive Edition" of Mafia 1, released a year ago, actually does a good job of being a proper remaster. It captures the spirit of the original, but with vastly upgraded visuals. Free to anyone who owned Mafia on Steam before the DE's release, or you can buy it separately now for ~$20-30 Euro/AUD/USD if you shop around. At that price it's worth it, especially as it comes with a Free Ride mode that you can access almost straight away.

This video is split into two sections: the first shows the start of the Fair Play story mission; the second begins at 6:25 and shows me fooling around in the Free Ride mode. Graphics are at maximum possible in this video.


IMPORTANTLY: To get the graphics to run smoothly, you must disable the in-game VSync and either run the game in Borderless Window mode, or as I've done, keep it set to Fullscreen in-game (to maintain GSync), but go to the game's main directory (typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Mafia Definitive Edition), right-click on mafiadefinitiveedition.exe and tick the 'Disable fullscreen optimizations' box under the Compatibility tab. Otherwise, the game will be capped at 58FPS and will stutter like crazy.

I've set in-game graphics to the High preset, and to clean up the image and add detail I've used the following settings in the Nvidia Control Panel:

Sharpen 0.01, Ignore Film Grain 1.00
Anisotropic Filtering: 16x
Anisotropic Sample Optimization: Off
Negative LOD Bias: Allow
Texture Filtering Quality: High Quality
Trilinear Optimization: Off

Note, I've also set an FPS limit of 74 here to prevent stuttering and to prevent stressing the CPU; for some reason this game likes to eat up multicore processors by generating a lot of heat.
