Magical Drop 3 (マジカルドロップ3) - Neo Geo Longplay - Full Playthrough (Data East, 1997)
2Another late NeoGeo release by Data East, Magical Drop 3 is a great addition to NeoGeo game library, and it's probably the best in the series.
Also: it's a nonsensical puzzle game about characters from the tarots battling for unspecified reasons (and because a dude with the classic playing card logo is manipulating them). I can't wrap my head around the lore: but it's a feature, not a problem.
From a technical standpoint Magical Drop 3 (as Magical Drop 1 and 2 before) is a fast-paced (usually competitive) puzzle game where players control a character at the bottom of the screen, who can move left and right to catch and throw colored orbs. The primary objective is to create vertical or horizontal lines of three or more matching orbs to clear them from the playfield. Orbs continuously descend from the top, and if they reach the bottom, the game ends. Players can catch multiple orbs of the same color at once and strategically throw them back to create combos, leading to massive clear-outs and higher scores. The game also features various characters, each with unique abilities that can affect gameplay, adding a layer of strategy and depth. The competitive mode allows players to battle against AI or another player, creating intense and exhilarating matches.
Yes, you have a solo game, and it's brilliant... but lacks emotion. In the third chapter the solo play is quite interesting, and you can pull off cool combos but... it lacks the whimsical approach of the battle mode, and all the cute voice screaming japanese oneliners, so I have clearly a preference here =).
As usual, this one (as all my playthroughs) use NO savestates. In my opinion, playing this way yields a footage more attuned to game and level design than save-state powered runs. When i feel like editing videos, i'll do a review, not a playthrough.
