Hello YouTube watcher. Here I show a comparative performance between two magnetic stirrers we have in the laboratory to ensure an appropriate mixing of the content in the High Pressure Equilibrium Cell we use to measure solubility in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2).

A good mixing is vital for measuring the solubility of a substance in a determined solvent, in order to both achieve the thermodynamic equilibrium of the system more quickly and make sure that the concentration of the solution is uniform, preventing it from depending on the sampling location. This requirement is fulfilled by using two resources:
1- A recycle flow.
2- A stirring device.
We had some problems with the stirring device, which consists of a spinning magnet located below the equilibrium cell, and a magnetic stirrer that is put in the middle of the cell, right above the spinning magnet. The stirrer in the cell got stuck many times when the cell was already pressurized, and we were unable to get it spinning again using magnets or other means that did not imply opening the cell. So, one of the alternatives we thought was that the shape of the stirrer was not the optimal for the cell and we had to use a different one to work with it in the future. The original stirrer we put in the cell was "Stirrer 1", and the "possible substitute" was "Stirrer 2". After carrying out this test, we put Stirrer 2 in the cell for the next load of solute, and we did not have any problems with the stirring device since then.

Details of the experiment:
- Same spinning magnet, set at the same spinning rate for both stirrers.
- Same starting place for both stirrers.
- Both stirrers were tested in the same equilibrium cell (a 50 cc stainless steel 316 cylinder).
- The cell was depressurized when we tested the performance of the stirrers, in fact, it was open.
- The only difference was the size and shape of the stirrers.
