So I've been eyeing this hike for quite some time. The OLD trail up Mailbox Peak was a rite of passage for many. It is still frequently used to train for mountaineering ascents. However, after numerous injuries, and rescues, and increased erosion, the WA Dept. of Natural Resources created a more gentle trail, the NEW trail which is a lengthier, more kind way up and down.

I opted for a hard ascent and an easier but longer descent. This was after surveying many hikers and climbers about their preference. I think that is the best way to do the trail. It is incredibly steep so save your knees on the way down!
