Maniac Mansion is full of ways to reach an unwinnable game state without actually getting game over. The fastest way appears to be getting the door locked from the inside with the only party member sent in the house captured. I didn't realize until now that closing the door behind you doesn't lock it, so you have to get Weird Ed to close it after a round of doorbell ditch.

For this I'm gonna say the timer stops when you lose control getting captured by Edna, when the menu options dissapear and she says "I Got You!". It seems like its more ideal (or less ideal rather since this is a tanking speedrun) to have Weird Ed answer the door immediately before getting captured by Edna but I don't know cause you have to go slow and/or wait for that cutscene anyway.
