Here's another tune from the Maniac Mansion soundtrack on the NES, Psychadelic Brie which is better known as Syd's Theme! On Syd's CD player in the game, it references this song as being Psychadelic Brie by Metalflake, hard to tell if that's a bizarre Psychadelic Furs reference, or an indictment of New Wave as cheese. Either way, it's a pretty slamming tune!

Musically, this is a pretty interesting song aside from being a very unusual sounding ska/new wave type tune. It has a number of accidentals that really give the lead melody an outside dissonance, which get exaggerated when the notes are also played rhythmically off the grid (the Maniac Mansion soundtrack features a number of tunes with notes that are not quantized, unusual for a videogame of the era). Also, unusual except to Maniac Mansion tunes, the bass is generally in a higher register than the rhythmic melodic track, which sounded surprisingly good even on standard guitar and bass vs squarewaves.

For tracking, I generally stuck to the original NES arrangement although I added a ska type guitar part to slightly exaggerate the ska feel of the song, and added more detail to the drum parts to make the song jam harder. Drum tracking was my usual setup, bass was direct in using the SHB-1 and God's Cab plugins, and the double tracked guitar parts were the Fender Cybertwin mic'd up with an sm57.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed (at least at the time of posting), apparently the first cover of Syd's Theme on YT, definitely fun to find those tracks that haven't been covered yet!
