Mario Kart Wii - Aug 1 09 A
It looks like some of you are wondering why when a race ends, you sometimes see points getting awarded like Mario GP instead of VR. That's because these are closed-room matches. You can arrange a lot of people on a Friend Code list to show up all at once, and you guys will have a race. You can tell that someone on your list has an open room you can join when the "Friends" icon shows a purple smiley face.
I happened to be playing this game online when there was a closed room race about to start, which is why I'm here. And no, do NOT ask me for my Friend Code or ask to race, as my roster is full, and unlike other games, these are all regular acquaintances that I can't afford to delete.
Race #1
Toad's Factory
I wonder if the game knows not to let an item scroll finish when you're being chased by a Red Shell, since I've never been able to stop one in time to block a Red Shell. It kicked off a series of collisions and attacks all throughout the second lap that knocked me from 2nd to 11th. I had forgotten how close these races could get. Even a small attack could lose you several positions.
Race #2
Maple Treeway
Is it me, or do I wind up playing as Birdo on Maple Treeway pretty often? I accidentally blasted myself with the Bob-omb at the end of the first lap, but I still managed to make my way into 4th place at the end. I saw that this "Dracula" was playing pretty aggressively, so I just let him smash anyone and followed behind him. I somehow managed to overtake him at the end (he wound up 5 positions below me, so he probably got hit) and took 3rd place overall.
Race #3
Daisy Circuit
This illustrates something else that bogs me down when using Manual: Your path through a course is pretty restricted, way more restricted than if you use Automatic, as you're going through corners drifting to use mini-turbos. It's fine and dandy when you're in Time Trials or you pulled ahead, but not so much when you're caught in the middle or low ranks along with a large group of other people. Because the path I intend to trace is hard to deviate from, the Item Boxes I plan to get wind up taken by someone else further up in front and I wind up unable to do much but keep going without any items.
