Nintendo’s Mario Maker games are an excellent tool for teaching level design. In 2019, we ran a +20 week, online-only workshop using Super Mario Maker 2 as a platform to rapidly share and test gameplay ideas. In this panel, we recap the lessons learned about Mario’s unique and top quality level design. Lessons include basic layouts, enemy complexity, layers, skill breakdowns, and secrets.
