INTRODUCTION (From mojontwins.com):

After experiencing the sweet taste of success, Maritrini woke up one fine day in a mess of bed sheets and with the biggest hangover she could remember from her thirty five years of age. Dazed by the remains of alcohol in her system and the persistent smell of cigarettes which polluted the whole house, she collapsed over a chair in the kitchen in front of a rusty coffee mug.

She still kept some signed books and the pictures taken during the filming of “Maritrini, Monster Slayer“, her most famous TV series, from which she still had recognition by the cashiers in the supermarket. However, since the series director Paul Duran was admitted to the Central Hospital with a bandaged face due to a sprained eyebrow (that’s what the medical report assured, at least) for eight weeks, everything changed for Maritrini. After such time, somebody who claimed to be the series director, but who didn’t look like Paul at all, fired Maritrini instantly.

The young enterpreneur, far from feeling discouraged, started a refresher course about “how to manage your own business”, became self-employed and added a small sign in her mailbox: “Maritrini: if you have a vampire after you I will turn it into poo“. The catchphrase was her friend Dani Alamenasbarriel‘s original idea. Dani was a genius in marketing and avertising.

That very morning the telephone rang. She looked for it amoung a bunch of paper sheets, pillows and plastic dishes covered with orange snacks until she finally found it. She answered and recognized the mysterious voice of her (new?) former boss at the other side of the line. He was somewhat alarmed and frightened. His daughter, his ONLY daughter, had been kidnapped by an evil organization which experimented to genetically modify human beings and turn them into monsters. An evil organization? Maritrini had never heared talking about something like that. When she tried to learn more about the whole matter from her former boss, the communication was cut. What was happenning? Somebody was trying to fill the city with blood scukers, zombies, amorphous beings? She didn’t recall Duran talking about a daughter… ever! Anyways, the only one able to solve this mystery is Maritrini herself, and Paul Duran is positive about that.

Will you accompany Maritrini in her search? Enter the bushes around Duran‘s mansion, visit the high school, take a look in a set of mines which lead to a mysterious underground lab… And, most importantly: watch your back and trust nobody!

GAMEPLAY (From mojontwins.com):

This is one of those games which simple and straight-forward mechanics: kill everything in sight, don’t get lost, look for stamina-recharging bottles to fill-up and keys to open doors, destroy the enemy spawners (otherwise they will keep on respawning forever), look for the exit to the next level, write down the password in a book for writing down passwords, score tons of points, jump in the jumpin’ jacks’ trampoline, and stop reading magazines with naked women.

REVIEW:

This game is a Gauntlet clone, and it offers 5 stages, each one with 4 levels, so there is actually 20 levels to play. The names of the stages is named after songs from “The Cure” e.g. the first stage is in the forest, and the name of this is “A forest”. You play as Maritrini and you pretty much has to blast away everything you meet on you way. The main object is to collect keys or key cards to open up new areas, and on your way you have to shoot all enemies and enemy spawners.

The game is really nice presented with great detailed colorful graphics, and there is four different in-game soundtracks. The whole screen is scrolling while moving around, and from stage 2 and above the screen is absolutely packed with a lot of colorful nice looking stuff. There is a good variety in the level design and in the types of enemies, but there is a few flaws that does that the game fails in being the ultimate Gauntlet game for the Spectrum. In the Gauntlet games the enemies could fire at you, they can not in this game, and in the Gauntlet games you could fire in diagonal directions – you can not do that here. The biggest minus with this game is that your energy points can be boosted unlimited by collecting bottles and reciving end of level energy bonuses, so after completing stage 1 (level 4) you will already have so much energy that you have to play really poor to die.
