Richard Smith - The Tank Museum Director - tells us about the very first tank - the Mark I - at Tank 100 event by The Tank Museum and Wargaming.Net.
On 15 September 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, the British Army sent tanks into action for the first time changing the nature of warfare for ever. We participated at Wargaming.Net and The Tank Museum event remembering the vehicle that changed art of war, forever.

The new mysterious weapon – the Mark I tank – 49 were earmarked, 32 made it to the start line and, of those, only 18 went into action. For many of the men in the tanks, it was their first experience of war. For some, it was their last. 150,000 men fought at Flers and there were 30,000 casualties, including those of the Heavy Section of the Machine Gun Corps.

To pay tribute to the centenary, the Museum’s Mark IV replica traveled to Trafalgar Square to mirror the ‘Tank Banks‘ of the First World War. Past and present met at noon, when it then drove to Horse Guards to meet the Challenger 2 – the tank currently used by the British Army. The Royal Tank Regiment were joined by the Household Cavalry, representing the move from the warhorse to the horsepower of the tank.

Tank Museum Curator David Willey said; “It is fitting that we should use the tank as a ‘prop’ to honour the memory of the brave and pioneering soldiers who fought in this first ever tank battle. Their experience sheds a different perspective on the conduct of the war and the experience of the troops that fought in it.”

Commemorations continued two days later at The Tank Museum in Bovington at the Tank 100 event. Before a display of historic vehicles since the First World War, the British Army shared the vehicles currently in use. The public also saw Ajax – Britain’s newest armoured vehicle – for the very first time.

Mark I:
The Mark I wasn’t just the first British tank—it the first tank, and it hit the battlefield 100 years ago, on September 15, 1916.
To celebrate, we’re hosting numerous in-game events in World of Tanks PC, Xbox, PS4, and World of Tanks Blitz.
World of Tanks’ huge offline celebration sees us once again partner with The Tank Museum, Bovington, for an extremely unique event.
Through some technological magic, you can see the Mark I roaming the streets.
For those that can’t make it to London, the Mark I is available with the Virtually Inside the First Tanks 360° video. Filmed at The Tank Museum and enhanced by in-game footage of the Mark I, it’s an innovative blend of technology.
