📖 Information on the game:
Final Blaster is a vertical shooter game by Namco, released exclusively in Japan in september of 1990. Development was taken over by Nova after the Namco subsidiary that started development filed for bankruptcy. It is the last in the Bosconian series - the final game. It got good reviews but was criticized for being too difficult! You could get this for the Wii Virtual Console in 2008.
🕹 ️ 🎮 Gameplay:
You Control the Blaster Mark II 'Phoenix' starfighter, you're tasked with genocide of the Bosconian alien race as they are dead set on utterly destroying earth. So it's genocide for a good cause then. You shoot down enemies, avoid oncoming ships and objects - contrary to the
previous game (Blast Off) it does feature a nice power-up mechanic:
Vulcan gun: initial weapon (collect red power pods to increase its strength, blue pods give access to other weapons like lasers and zig zag shots)
Holding down fire button charges the ship into a raging firebird (read this
after trying to learn to play this game)
The game has 7 stages and learning it is tough!
2️ ⃣Sequels:
I Bosconian was the first game in the Bosconian series (Arcade)(with spin offs Bosconian '87 on various home computers)
Two sequels followed:
II Blast Off in 1989 (Arcade only) and
III Final Blaster in 1990 for the PC-Engine
⏳ Legacy:
Bosconian is widely recognized as a pioneering influence on multidirectional shooters, earning the title "granddaddy of the multidirectional shooter" from Retro Gamer. It inspired notable arcade games like Sinistar (1983) and Time Pilot (1982). The game has been included in multiple Namco Museum compilations across various consoles, such as PlayStation, and was also featured in Jakks Pacific's TV game controllers, ensuring its legacy endures in gaming history.
Scores: 9/10 for both the Arcade and PCEngine versions. An absolute favourite of mine for sure. The last game is tough but learning it is fun. The power up scheme makes it more enjoyable than the Blast Off Arcade game that came before this game.
All the games were playable on the MiSTer FPGA.
