Matthews had a spectacular rookie season after being drafted #4 Overall by the Denver Outlaws during the 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft. Matthews tallied 19 Goals and 9 Assists in just 9 games played in 2012. At Championship Weekend he continued to thrive scoring 3 goals and 5 assists as the Outlaws made their push for their first ever Steinfeld Cup. Matthews 28 points found him tied in second place amongst rookies in scoring with Ohio Machine Attackman Steele Stanwick. Long Island Lizards Attackman Matt Gibson led all rookies with 33 Points.
