Mass Effect 5 may switch back to Unreal Engine
Developer BioWare is reportedly considering moving back to Unreal Engine for ‘Mass Effect 5’.
As reported by GamesBeat, the series’ publisher Electronic Arts, recently posted a job listing for a Technical Director to work on “the next instalment in BioWare’s acclaimed Mass Effect franchise”.
In the requirements of the job listing, it cites that “Experience with UnrealEngine4+ is an asset” for potential candidates, possibly pointing to a switch back to Unreal Engine for the next game.
Whilst this doesn’t confirm BioWare is definitely moving away from EA’s Frostbite Engine, the GamesBeat report states that multiple sources have said this may be the case because “everything is on the table when it comes to tech for a new Mass Effect”.
The first three ‘Mass Effect’ games were built using Unreal Engine 3, but after Electronic Arts’ acquisition of BioWare, the studio moved to EA’s Frostbite Engine for 2017’s ‘Mass Effect: Andromeda’.
