McIntosh has unveiled its latest all-in-one streaming speakers with the RS150 building on and updating 2016's RS100, while the RS250 is the new stereo model usurping the RS200.
McIntosh's mono RS150 is touted as a user-friendly and compact wireless speaker delivering a larger-than-life home audio sound performance, while the stereo RS250 is pitched as the Binghamton brand's most advanced and powerful home audio wireless speaker system to date.
The RS150 and RS250 are designed to be stand-alone, complete wireless speaker solutions. Additionally, rather than using a dedicated control app, they already have “cast-to” technologies baked-in, including Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, Chromecast, and they are also Roon Ready. Networking is via the wired Ethernet port or Wi-Fi (a, b, g, n, and ac). You can also control the RS150 and RS250 via Google Assistant through a compatible Google Assistant device.
Wireless connectivity includes Bluetooth 5.0 with support for both the high bitrate AAC standard as well as Qualcomm aptX HD for hi-res audio playback and Qualcomm aptX Low Latency for improved syncing between audio and video.
McIntosh RS150
The RS150 wireless loudspeaker replaces the RS100 and ups the ante with double the power output (from 60 Watts total power to 120 Watts total power) and sports a 5¼-inch woofer in place of the RS100's 4-inch unit. The latter sits in a larger and reengineered enclosure that we're told results in higher output with lower distortion and deeper bass extension.
McIntosh has added Bass control to fine-tune the low frequencies based on unique room characteristics and listening preferences to control that extra low end.
Finally, there's a removable speaker grille if you want to put that woofer and tweeter on show.
McIntosh RS250
The larger of the two newcomers features a dedicated phono input and an audio-only HDMI (ARC) input for better audio performance when watching your favourite shows, movies, or sports.
The RS250 has an optical input to connect digital sources and a 3.5mm AUX input for connecting other music sources. In addition, personal listening is accommodated thanks to a ¼-inch headphone jack on the front panel.
The McIntosh RS250 offers 650 Watts of power and behind the removable grille, you'll find four 2-inch midrange drivers, a brace of ¾-inch tweeters and a pair of 4- x 6-inch downward-firing woofers.
Orders for the RS150 and RS250 can be placed now with shipping to the United States and Canada to start December 2021 for RS150, and January 2022 for RS250. Shipping to the rest of the world will follow shortly thereafter.
The suggested retail price in the USA for the McIntosh RS150 is $1,200 USD, and the RS250 is $3,000 USD.
