Mech combat in beta gameplay of Grit and Valor - 1949 a real time dieselpunk & roguelite game
We don’t get dieselpunk themed games very often, and this one even has mech combat in it! It is a real-time tactics roguelite set in an alt-history World War 2 titled: Grit and Valor – 1949 where you upgrade your Mechs and Pilots in each mission and develop new strategies to beat the Axis!

You get to be the daring commander of a small allied resistance camp full of crazy pilots ready to take on the entire Axis army, mechs included, on their own. Lucky, for this impossible mission you are equipped not just with a few captured and repurposed mechs, but also with a full base off the Scottish coast.

There you can use points you have gained in your previous attempts at beating the current scenario to improve your mechs, as this is a roguelike game, which doesn’t even let you save between missions, and forces you to use your one life to try to finish the entire scenario in one go.
This gameplay is from a closed beta, which is running from the 4th to the 16th of December and you can apply at the game’s Steam store page, link is in the description. The gameplay is fully real time, while the combat is based on a Rock/paper/scissors system, which in this game is represented by ballistic units beating flame units, flame units beating explosive units and explosive units beating ballistic units. Sounds so very simple in theory, but in the chaos of battle, while you are trying to protect your commander’s vehicle and to capture not just side objectives but also rewards that get dropped between each enemy wave it becomes very hard to manage every piece even on such a small board.
A very interesting detail is that both your and enemy units can’t fire while moving, while there is a system of cover and height advantage, as well as pilot skills which are these special kinds of attacks or defensive actions which have a limited number of uses per each scenario run.
In the closed beta you have the British islands scenario to beat first, and only then can you access the second one, set in Scandinavia. The maps themselves offer chains of missions and encounters. Some missions are much more difficult but offer better rewards and upgrades your mechs get to keep during the whole individual run. While some encounters increase your offensive or defensive capabilities. A few even let you use one of the currency types to by black market items.
This beta includes access to six types of mechs, and several pilots, each with a different ability. These abilities can even be upgraded during each scenario run, so instead of one mine being placed you can choose several types of upgraded ones.
I must admit it feels hectic until you get a better grasp of the mechanics and tactics but it is a load of fun, and playing a game which looks made for turn based gameplay in real time is a strange one. The full game is expected to launch in 2025 with several campaign scenarios and more mechs, pilots and upgrades. Now excuse me, I have a boss fight to get to, and it might take me a few more runs before I am skilled enough to get there.
