We look to journalists and the media to challenge authority and uncover failure in addition, of course, to entertaining us. But in the face of a national, and in the case of Covid-19 a global crisis, some have argued that the media focus on challenging government, hyping drama, and focusing on negative stories, is irresponsible.

Should the media avoid creating fear and panic in a population faced with a real threat? Or should journalism always be driven by the biggest story?

Nicholas Robinson is a journalist, currently a presenter on the BBC's Today programme. Prior to this he spent ten years as political editor for the BBC.

Jessica Phillips is a Labour Party politician. She has served as the Member of Parliament for Birmingham Yardley since the 2015 general election. Phillips was a candidate for Leader of the Labour Party in the 2020 leadership election.

David Goodhart is a British journalist, commentator, and author. He is the founder and former editor of Prospect magazine.
