MediEvil: Resurrection - PlayStation Portable - Intro & Level 1 & 2 gameplay [4k60]
The first remakes of MediEvil is an interesting port of the PS1 classic, not least because of the yo-yo frame seen in-game on real hardware. Ranging from 60fps on menus to as low as 15fps in some large open areas. This makes for a far from ideal experience when playing and controlling Dan. Perhaps this version would have been better suited to the PlayStation 2, it's a shame it wasn't ported to the home console.
MediEvil: Resurrection is a rebuilt version of the whole game with many more changes than were present in the later PlayStation 4 remake. This version had all the levels rebuilt with many playing very differently to the original game, it also has a more comedic take on the story and design with the original PS1 version feeling quite a bit darker in how characters like Zarok look. The hall of heroes is changed from a Viking like hall to a sky castle, some fans will like others won't.
Another huge change is the addition of the character Al-Zalam a genie who live inside of Dan's skull and acts as a character who provides hints and jokes as you play. Even if his introduction in the story is somewhat overly long and he comes across as quite annoying at first. One big improvement in this version is the voice acting with Tom Baker's brilliant narration and the talking gargoyles of Zarok replacing the bland hint books with some great dialogue.
On the downside some levels have been cut from the game while others have been merged together. The soundtrack is a mixture of remixed songs and all new ones composed by the original game composers.
Gameplay is the same as the original with the game being a mix of platformer and hack and slash, while the controls are okay the frame rate drops don't help them. All in all this is a remakes that differs somewhat from the original game, some fans will like it, others will hate it. The performance is an issue and a PS2 version may have solved a lot of these problem. For a game that was said to have been put together in less than a year, it's a decent remake, one that could have done with more polish and less content cuts.
