MeeGo & Intel's AppUp! Will we See Cross Platform Applications?
http://www.netbooknews.com I recently finished up an article "MeeGo with WebOS & Android Features: Contender or Copy Cat?" and it got me thinking about Apps. In the last article I wrote:
"What makes MeeGo interesting isn't that its a new and emerging OS from Intel & Nokia, what makes it interesting its is its cross platform ambitions. If it were another Linux mutation then I would call it "A distraction adding to market fragmentation" BUT since MeeGo has its eye's set on netbooks, tablets, phones, media phones, in vehicle entertainment and a few other segments makes it a possible game changer. Game changer is a cliche but a true cross platform UI is the first step to a converged device. The creation of a platform that will carry its applications to multiple device is a sexy thing."
What it got me thinking about was Apple and their success on going cross platform with their OS, well, its not so much one OS but a closed circle surrounding hardware and software. One of the major reasons behind the iPads success isn't about what it could do but the possibilities of what it could do. The iPad is a blank canvas that you fill with meaning targeted at your exact wants through applications. And its alot of applications! If there is something the iPad couldn't do there are tens of thousands of App Developers rallying their support for the ecosystem. If anything is ever lacking they have the developers behind them to build a little bridge ensuring the device can do what people want it to. We are waiting for Marketplace to become official on Android Tablets as this would be the only substantial competitor coming to market in the near future.
But, let me tell you thing or two about developers, they aren't the most loyal people, they will go where the money is. This is something that Intel is addressing, with the "Intel Atom Developer Challenge 2010", by pushing AppUp! now during the infancy of the Operating System they might be able to launch with a full suite of applications targeted at mobile computing. AppUp! ...
