This was originally accomplished using the Mega Man Anniversary Collection for the PS2. While not as bad as my Mega Man 2 recording from back then this run had originally suffered some audio slow down issues from my previous set up. I decided to dust off my Mega Man 3 cartridge and accomplish the same feat on the original Nintendo. In the end I was able to complete the entire run without using a single energy tank in addition to the no death goal. The video itself shows many of the strategy employed so, like the mega man 2 no death run, I wanted to compare this with my original recording done in September of 2008 ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBFZk5g-lb0&list=PL40D1BF4CC37B8409 ). If you have the time, I encourage you to see the original run after watching this video.

The first diversion I made was changing the order in which the boss stages were handled. In this version I start in a similar fashion with magnet and hard man. Then I choose to go with top, shadow, snake, spark, gemini, and finally needle man. The doc robot stages really didn’t matter and I just went from left to right and then top to bottom.

From a general perspective I used magnet missiles a little more frequently against the Hammer Joes to clear them out quicker and utilized this weapon against the pesky hopping Mechakkeros. There is some inherent slow down on the NES verses the PlayStation version during the Spark Man Robot stage, so I choose to use the rush jet to get past the trash chute portion. Another optimization was the use of the hard knuckle against the Big Snakey mid bosses on snake man stage.

Boss battles with a few exceptions seeming to go a lot smoother. For one I decided to employ a little safer dodging strategy with my snake man fight. I wound up taking far less damage than before. Needle man was an improvement where I fired a shot with my best guess and then focused on dodging his attacks more. During my play throughs I noticed that the real mega man clone always appears at the top of the screen in Dr. Wily’s third stage. This allowed me to make short work of him with the top spin, instantly ending the fight, rather than seeking out the real clone with the needle cannon. I found it helpful to change to spark when handling bubble man because of the limited range of the shadow blade. Finally, I decided to just end the final battle with the top spin rather than boomerang jumping off the platform with search snake in tow.

I did have some issues with other bosses during this run. The first issue was I forgot the pattern for the yellow devil and choose to hover out of danger using the rush jet during his initial appearance. The fight was a little nasty until I dialed in my timing, but it was still better than the original run. The other fight that was tricky was the heat man battle mainly because my input to turn and fire the shadow blade were being eaten at an alarming rate. I found that the game will allow you to throw the blade but then you must slide out of the way at the last possible moment to get away without damage. By the end of the game, I had accrued 16 extra lives and, even though the e-tank tally maxes out at nine, we collected a total of 11 during the journey.
