Seasonic is developing a new feature for its upcoming Prime power supplies to address the recurring issue of melting 12VHPWR and 12V-2x6 power connectors. While not fixing the root cause (like cable quality or improper insertion), the solution targets the problem of unbalanced power loads from graphics cards, which can lead to overheating and damage.
The proposed technology involves a combination of sensors, a microcontroller, and firmware within the PSU. This system is designed to monitor voltage and current. Seasonic plans a two-factor protection: first, an external device will alert users to potential issues, allowing them to monitor the connectors in real-time.
Crucially, the next-generation Prime PSUs will also feature special circuitry with sensors directly on the 12V-2x6 power connectors near the PSU. If these sensors detect that temperature or current exceeds safe thresholds, the PSU will not only send a notification but also trigger its built-in over-temperature and over-current protection, leading to an automatic system shutdown.
This automatic shutdown, while potentially interrupting tasks like offline rendering, is intended to save expensive graphics cards from permanent damage. However, the article also notes a potential downside: an abrupt shutdown could risk corrupting data on SSDs or HDDs.
Seasonic aims to complete development of these new Prime-series PSUs by the end of the year, with sales expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026. The added technology may increase the price of these already premium power supplies.
