Mercedes-Benz has updated its award-winning MBUX infotainment system for 2021, turning it into an all-encompassing technology hub that extends into the car owner’s home.
Yes, that’s right: MBUX is no longer confined to infotainment duties, it’s now part of every system in the vehicle. This means it tracks your eye movements, recognizes hand gestures, and responds to touch and voice inputs.
It’s all centred around a vertical 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen with haptic feedback; the screen encompasses functions like navigation, connectivity, entertainment, and climate control. This screen allowed Mercedes-Benz to eliminate 27 buttons from its dashboard for a cleaner look.
Taking another page from Tesla’s book, MBUX now has over-the-air updates, as well as the ability to let drivers make in-vehicle purchases. To prevent accidentally purchasing 28 Model 3s, however, users will need to identify themselves via voice command, facial recognition, fingerprint, or PIN.
The digital instrument cluster now has a 3D effect with an augmented-reality HUD directly in the line of sight. When the turn signal is activated, it can virtually show exactly which street to turn on.
If you’ve ever lost something in your car, MBUX has you covered with a psuedo ‘control-F’ function that will allow you to ask the vehicle questions, uh, about the vehicle. For instance, you can quiz it on where the first aid kit is, or how to pair a phone via Bluetooth. You can also ask MBUX fun questions thanks to its “Chit Chat” function, like “what sounds does a cow make?”
Adding to the connectivity, MBUX can be paired with Smart Home functions to make your commute flow seamlessly with your home life. Why wait to get in the door when you could ask, “Hey Mercedes, preheat the oven” — in the off chance you’re someone who drives an S-Class and also makes their own dinner.
