This is an example test video of the Mercury MoviePix MP5A4 HD Digital Video Camcorder, recording in QVGA quality setting.
In order to compare and contrast the different quality settings of this camera, three different example test videos were taken using the Mercury MoviePix MP5A4 HD Digital Video Camcorder (all available on my YouTube channel) namely in QVGA, WVGA and 720p quality settings.
All three quality settings are encoded by the device using the H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1) video codec, producing a .MOV file for each video. The audio records in stereo and uses the MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a) codec at 48000 Hz.
The QVGA quality setting produced a video resolution of 320 X 240 at 29.97 frames per second (FPS) and weighed in at 4,376 kb of
disk space for 51 seconds of video.
The WVGA quality setting produced a video resolution of 848 X 480 at 59.94 frames per second (FPS) and weighed in at 10,185 kb of
disk space for 45 seconds of video.
The 720p quality setting produced a video resolution of 1280 X 720 at 29.97 frames per second (FPS) and weighed in at 27,075 kb of
disk space for 53 seconds of video.
Despite the significant difference in file size and video resolution between the WVGA and 720p capture formats, I could not make out much of a difference as far as image clarity and focus went from one format to another. That being said, and given the better 'file size per capture time' ratio, the doubled frame per second rating (59.94 FPS in WVGA mode versus 29.97 FPS in 720p mode) and the lesser CPU processing power needed to play back the video, my vote for 'best choice of video recording format' on the Mercury MoviePix MP5A4 HD Digital Video Camcorder goes to WVGA mode. Needless to say, the QVGA capture format showed the most MPEG compression grainyness / blockyness of the three formats.
