The Messerschmitt Me 163B was an attempt to create a "wonder weapon" – Germany's response to Allied bombing raids. As a rocket-powered interceptor, it reached speeds exceeding 1,000 km/h, exceeding the capabilities of most Allied aircraft. Designed by Alexander Lippisch and tested by legendary pilot Heini Dittmar, the "Komet" was a technological sensation – the first aircraft to break the 1000 km/h barrier. However, its incredible speed came at the cost of extreme risk. Its flight time was only about 12 minutes and its range ranged from 27 to 100 km, significantly limiting the aircraft's operational capabilities. After exhausting its fuel, the aircraft transformed into a glider, forcing pilots to make difficult and risky landings without power – often on a single skid. These aircraft could only re-enter combat operations after being towed to an airfield and prepared for takeoff.
