Metal Gear Solid focuses on the inherent disparity between player and player character that runs contrary to the supposedly escapist nature of games. Essentially, it's saying "you can't escape real life, you know this is fake, and so do we". However, it spends a considerable amount of time lulling the player in to thinking that it's a typical military action game before springing the outlandish story beats that Metal Gear's now known for.
