Metal Slug 2 had so many slowdowns so SNK decided to release an upgraded version, Metal Slug X.
They made many changes, like remixing or changing most of the music, had a new announcer, changed the time of day on stages, the possibility to become fat on more levels, more enemies at new placements, new enemies, different enemies and new boss placements, more powerups and items on stages, stronger versions of weapons, new weapons, Metal Slug art at the credits screen, etc etc.
The only reason to even play Metal Slug 2 is to see how much better Metal Slug X is.
