A late NES game that starred a gravity-flipping mecha. Let's discuss why this makes absolutely perfect sense.

Wish I could've gotten the Retro-Bit reprint of this game while it was still around. Anyway, I've wanted to cover more mecha projects, but outside of the inevitable fear of copyright, I always misjudged the prospect of reviewing them as a monumental task. Turns out, I was falling for the very same myth about the appeal of mechas that I'd always advocate. That past the complexity or technical factor of any damn good mecha project is something that immediately hits you in the heart that's worth putting into words, either subconsciously or underhandedly. Metal Storm is a perfect encapsulation of that hidden appeal, and the perfect icebreaker for mecha media discussion.

It's been a game I've wanted to cover for a while. Hell, I didn't even exist when this game released in 1992 and yet its mecha brand immediately captured my attention after the fact. The endings in particular, I've been holding that stuff in for sometime. Another thing I wanted to add about the gameplay analysis is that you see indie projects nowadays that do roll with a special gimmick for both challenging trials AND freeform experimentation. Even Metal Storm's gravity flipping would be greatly expanded on with games like VVVVVV! So I'd like to think that Metal Storm was more than just a byproduct of the beginning of the 16-bit gen/the end of the 8-bit gen, but also the game that kickstarted the initiative of crafting games around a solitary gameplay gimmick, regardless of where they stand technically.

Thanks as always for watching. If you couldn't tell, this was one of the most fun videos I've made in a while. I hope I can keep this passionate momentum going. Stay Stylish.
