Sometimes data alone isn’t enough to tell a story about our users. Then again, sometimes traditional observational methods of user research don’t give us the granularity we desire. In many cases, a mixed-methods approach combining telemetry and traditional research methods is necessary to get at the meat of a usability issue. This talk will discuss in detail some of the telemetry hooks we use at Volition, and how our data-driven approach informs our user research.

Speaker: Matthew White
Dr. Matthew White is Deep-Silver Volition’s data scientist. A former academic, Dr. White helps Volition embed telemetry, mine data, perform quantitative analysis, perform A/B tests, and apply statistics wherever needed. Dr. White has presented at and chaired content for the IGDA GURsig’s yearly summit in 2015. He’s a member of the user research SIG, and presented at #gamesUR London. He developed Penn State University’s game development program, and was previously an IGDA Scholar. Before Penn State, Dr. White ran two small startups in Canada, and did private usability consulting during his Ph.D., which he obtained from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
