The question of how the reactions of users to the narrative content of a game can be assessed prior to release is a thorny and underexplored issue in UX research. This represents a serious potential challenge for game developers, and the UX community specifically.

The goal of this roundtable is to bring together GUR researchers working or interested in this area both to promote discussion of techniques and experiences in this area, and begin to develop a preliminary library of techniques and resources to support the future efforts of practitioners or researchers.

This roundtable will provide direct benefit to attendees who can share and absorb ideas, strategies, and experiences related to assessing the impact of narrative on the user experience of players. In addition, the generated documentation will serve as the starting point for a public knowledge base to serve as an enduring resource for practitioners and researchers alike.

Speaker: Adams Greenwood-Ericksen
Adams Greenwood-Ericksen, PhD, is Chief Scientist at the Full Sail User Research Lab at Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida. Along with his colleagues at the lab, he has worked on or supervised user experience testing on dozens of AAA and Indie titles, including Master of Orion, Dying Light, World of Warships, Path of Exile, and others. He maintains several ongoing lines of research, including work on the interface components of narrative in games.

Speaker: Juliana Goriounov
Juliana Goriounov, MS, is a UX lab analyst at Epic Games and a graduate of the Full Sail User Research lab. She has provided UX support on a number of Epic Games products. During her time at Full Sail, she also provided support to several shipped titles such as, Master of Orion, World of Warships, and several unannounced Wargaming.net games. She has an ongoing research interest in the assessment and study of narrative and narrative interfaces, in particular on the way in which dialog options are presented to players and impact their experience with the narrative and the game as a whole.
