Metro: Last Light takes place in 2034, one year after the events of Metro 2033, following the ending of the original novel in which Artyom missile attacks the Dark Ones—mysterious creatures who seem to threaten the survivors of nuclear war living in Moscow. Metro — happened. The Rangers, a neutral peacekeeping force operating system-wide, have occupied the D6 military facility that Artyom visited during the first game. It's a massive pre-war bunker that hasn't been fully explored, and Artyom, now a Ranger, remains unsure whether killing the Dark Ones was the right decision. Rumors of the invention of the D6 and its immense fortune had spread throughout Metro; Rival factions, such as the Soviet Red Line and the Nazi Fourth Reich, hoped to seize the bunker and its contents.
Khan, a wandering mystic, tells Artyom and the Rangers that one Dark One survived a missile attack. Khan believed that it was the key to mankind's future, and wanted to communicate with him; Colonel Miller, the Ranger's leader, wants to eliminate him as a potential threat. Miller sends Artyom to the surface, accompanied by Miller's daughter, Anna, the Rangers' best sniper, to kill the Dark One.
Artyom finds the Dark One, a child, but is captured by soldiers of the Fourth Reich. Pavel Morozov, a captured Red Line soldier, and Artyom escape through the Metro tunnel and across the ruined surface. When they reach the Red Line, however, Pavel is demoted to a high ranking officer; he restrained Artyom to learn more about the Rangers and the Dark One. Artyom flees and races with Pavel's army to find the Dark One and Anna, who has been kidnapped by Lesnitsky, a former Ranger and Red Line spy. On the way, he encounters a contingent of Red Line troops massacring the residents of a station, suspected of containing a mysterious epidemic. It was the Red Line that introduced the virus to the station – armed Ebola obtained from the D6 vault by Lesnitsky. Artyom finds Anna and frees her but they catch a virus and are quarantined after the rescue. Fearing that she would die, Anna teased Artyom.
After they test negative for the virus, Artyom again meets Khan. They find a young Dark One, and in a series of hallucinatory flashbacks, Artyom remembers that he was saved by the Dark One as a child; she is psychically linked to the Dark Ones, meant to form a bridge between their species and hers. Artyom vows to make amends by protecting the little Dark One, and the two travel to Polis, the central area of the Metro, where a peace conference regarding D6 between the Rangers, Red Line, Reich, and the neutral Hansa is taking place. Artyom defeats Lesnitsky and Pavel during the journey. Along the way, little Dark One sensed that there was a group of Dark Ones hibernating in D6. Upon arriving at the Police, little Dark One uses his telepathic abilities to make the leader of the Red Line, Chief Moskvin, publicly admit that the peace conference is a diversion to allow General Korbut to seize D6. Artyom and the rest of the Rangers rush to the bunker to make a last stand against the Korbut soldiers but are unable to by the armored train crashing into their station. The Red Line Army surrounded and prepared to execute Artyom and Miller.
The karma earned by the player determines the ending. In a "bad" ending, Artyom destroys D6 to prevent Korbut from using the facility to exterminate the remnants of other factions and possibly humanity, resulting in the deaths of himself, the surviving Rangers, and the Red Line troops. Later, Anna is shown telling their son about Artyom's bravery. In the "good" ending, later revealed to be the canonical ending, Artyom prepares to destroy the bunker but is stopped by the little Dark One, who, along with the awakened Dark One, defeats the Korbut army. Artyom calls the Dark One the "last light of hope" of mankind. In both endings, the young Dark Ones leave with the surviving Dark Ones to find safety, all while promising that they will return in the future to help rebuild the world.
