Metro: Last Light is a post-apocalyptic story-driven stealth based FPS. If you set it to 'Easy' mode then even someone as unskilled as me can get through it just fine, there's no great reliance on you being able to shoot straight. The stealth mechanic also means you don't have to depend so much on quick reactions to get through the shooting bits and on to the story. So far I'm really enjoying it, even the bits where alien creatures leap out at you with little warning.

Although the game is Linux-native there are some issues, particularly with the sound. You need to use ALSA instead of PulseAudio, which means that my normal screen recording routine didn't work, so apologies for the quiet game audio and over-loud mic work with even more heavy breathing than normal. The game also crashed at one point when I was recording, though it has been OK the rest of the time.

As I said the sound can be an issue, I watched the intro movie for the whole game with no sound at all. It seems this can happen on systems with multiple sound cards. In order to get the game audio working in Fedora I took the following steps:

1. Add 'SDL_AUDIODRIVER=alsa %command%' to the launch options for the game in Steam

2. Lookup your default soundcard and create an .asoundrc file according to this blog post: http://ptspts.blogspot.co.uk/2009/03/how-to-select-alsa-sound-card-and-have.html

3. Log out and back in again, game audio should now work.

Although I say in the video I got it in a Humble Bundle, it turns out I got it in the Steam sale:

SOUND ISSUE UPDATE: I've found that simply killing the PulseAudio server before starting the game is the most reliable way to get the sound to work, in the command line:

pulseaudio -k

I AM AN IDIOT UPDATE: I'm not sure how I convinced myself this game was called 'Last Night' instead of 'Last Light', but I did.
