Banished is a medieval/middle ages era city-building strategy game where you control a group of exiles who attempt to restart their lives in a new land. You have to pay a lot of attention to resource management as a lack in production of just one resource can hamstring all your development efforts. Over-production of complex goods can suck up all your supplies and leave your people starving or freezing to death during a bad winter. It is easy to get yourself into a vicious circle of doom, which some may find frustrating, but it seemed to me that the game was cruel but fair. It was clear to me what mistake I'd made each time my town collapsed and, when I finally did get the first few years right, it was all the more satisfying.

At present this game is Windows only, though the developer is keen to release Mac and Linux versions. In the meantime it works beautifully under WINE.
