On Normal Mode the game gives you 10 continues with each giving you 3 lives each, before having to restart the stage from the continue screen. I only ended up using 2 continues to beat the game, the first time through. I got stuck on some awkward parts like the first mech battle, not understanding how to play it, but you get infinite lives for those sections basically as you don't die no matter what. I almost lost another continue on the final boss but scraped by. Quite a good game overall.
