Build A Rocket Boy, the developer and publisher of the recently launched game MindsEye, has initiated a redundancy process impacting an unconfirmed number of staff. The studio confirmed IGN's report, stating that while they are attempting to reassign roles, a formal consultation process that may result in redundancies has begun. This decision follows the troubled launch of MindsEye, which has faced significant performance issues, glitches, and AI behavior problems, leading to a "mostly negative" user review rating on Steam and reports of players securing refunds.
The redundancy process, which started on June 23, is triggered under UK law when a company proposes 100 or more redundancies within 90 days, suggesting a substantial number of the studio's approximately 300 UK employees could be affected. This situation raises concerns about the studio's ability to deliver on its promised post-launch content roadmap for MindsEye, including a multiplayer mode, on schedule. The game's problematic launch also saw the cancellation of sponsored streams, indicating severe initial reception issues.
MindsEye is a story-driven action-adventure game that was originally intended as part of "Everywhere," a creation platform. Build A Rocket Boy, based in Edinburgh, Scotland, shifted its focus to MindsEye but has not yet achieved commercial success with it. Co-CEO Mark Gerhard has stated the studio remains committed to the game, indicating a transition from an intense development phase to a sustainable post-launch support phase.
The studio's challenges have been public, with Gerhard previously claiming a "concerted effort" to "trash the game and the studio" through paid negative comments or spam bots, a claim that was subsequently denied by the head of publisher IO Interactive. Despite these difficulties, Build A Rocket Boy maintains that the current shift is intended to focus on ongoing updates and performance optimization for MindsEye, while also securing the long-term future of the studio.
