Dying Light: The Beast is an upcoming standalone entry in the Dying Light franchise, developed and published by Techland. Initially conceived as a DLC for Dying Light 2: Stay Human, its scope significantly expanded, leading to its reclassification as a full-fledged AAA title. This evolution means the game will offer substantial content, estimated at 20 to 40 hours of gameplay, with the main story alone providing approximately 20 hours. It is scheduled for release on August 22, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X, priced at $59.99 USD. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions are planned for later in 2025, with a focus on further polish. Notably, players who purchased the Ultimate Edition of Dying Light 2: Stay Human will receive The Beast at no additional charge.

The game aims to return to the grittier, more horror-focused atmosphere of the original Dying Light, a shift from Dying Light 2's more optimistic tone. This includes making nights genuinely threatening and "pitch black," addressing a key criticism of its predecessor. Players can expect increased brutality and gore, with gruesome takedowns and intense visuals. A significant new gameplay element is the "Beast Mode," an evolved fury mode for the returning protagonist, Kyle Crane. This mode is no longer restricted by story moments and features a dedicated skill tree to enhance his supernatural abilities, allowing for brutal executions.

Gameplay is described as a blend of the best aspects of both Dying Light 1 and Dying Light 2, leaning more towards the refined mechanics of the second game, including improved parkour. The new setting, Castor Woods, is a smaller but denser environment designed to heighten the horror, featuring distinct areas crafted with attention to detail. Technical enhancements include improved lighting, creating a dreadful and immersive world with unique visual tones. An adaptive soundtrack, composed by the same artist as Dying Light 2, also aims to enhance the atmosphere of isolation and fear, while the popular chase mechanic and roaming Volatiles are set to return.

Despite these promising aspects, a key concern highlighted is the inconsistency in enemy hit reactions and physics during combat. This lack of visceral feedback potentially detracts from the intended brutality and impact of weapon strikes, requiring further refinement from Techland. Overall, Dying Light: The Beast is positioned as a significant evolution for the franchise, striving to combine the series' strengths with a renewed focus on horror and brutal combat, with the goal of ushering in a "new golden era" for Dying Light.
