The Microsoft Authenticator application is undergoing a significant change, with its password management and autofill features being discontinued. This strategic decision, affecting millions of users, is part of Microsoft's larger vision for a passwordless future and an effort to centralize autofill functions within the Microsoft Edge browser. Critical deadlines are in place: as of June 2025, new passwords could no longer be added, autofill will cease in July 2025, and by August 1, 2025, all saved passwords will become permanently inaccessible within the app. Users must export their passwords before this final deadline to prevent data loss.
Microsoft's rationale for this shift is multifaceted. Primarily, it aims to accelerate the transition to a passwordless environment, promoting Passkeys as a more secure and convenient alternative to traditional passwords, which are prone to phishing attacks. The Authenticator app will continue to serve as a Passkey provider and a multi-factor authentication (MFA) tool. Additionally, the move consolidates password management into Microsoft Edge, which is seen as an effort to streamline autofill support and, implicitly, increase Edge's market share in the competitive browser landscape. While framed as a security enhancement, some critics also view it as a response to recent security scrutiny and a strategic maneuver to boost Edge adoption.
This deprecation has substantial implications for various user groups. Individual users who relied on Authenticator for password storage are now compelled to migrate their credentials, either to Microsoft Edge or to a third-party password manager. This has reportedly caused dissatisfaction among users who feel pushed towards Edge. For organizations, the change highlights the limitations of using consumer-grade password management solutions, which often lack centralized control and visibility. It prompts IT leaders to re-evaluate their security posture and consider adopting robust, enterprise-grade password management solutions, as migrating to in-browser storage might not offer sufficient security for business environments.
To avoid data loss, users must export their passwords from the Authenticator app before August 1, 2025. Microsoft recommends migrating to Edge, providing specific instructions for enabling it as an autofill provider. Alternatively, users can export their passwords to a CSV file and import them into a third-party password manager like LastPass or Bitwarden. It is crucial to immediately delete the unencrypted export file after successful import due to security vulnerabilities. The Authenticator app itself will remain active as a dedicated tool for MFA and Passkey management, solidifying its role in modern cybersecurity authentication, rather than general credential storage.
