The basic idea is that there are two sets of redstone repeaters side by side, one on a larger delay than the other, with a sticky piston moving a block in front of either one of them. Thus, depending on whether the piston is activated, the signal passes to the other side more or less quickly. Trying to make the circuit as compact as possible horizontally, and there's stuff to figure out along the way, like how to transmit 10 separate signals straight down in as compact a manner as possible.
