This shows how to change someones health using commands.
This is the most simplest method I've seen of this.
This works in any version of Minecraft.

Command:
/replaceitem entity @a slot.armor.head minecraft:stone_button 1 0 {AttributeModifiers:[{Operation:0,UUIDLeast:3,UUIDMost:3,Amount:100.0,AttributeName:generic.maxHealth,Name:head}],displ­ay:{Name:"Random Name"}}
