In Minecraft 1.5.0, there is a new ore called the Nether Quartz Ore. This was released on the 13w01A release. The release number means that Nether Quartz Ore was released on 2013, on the first week (01), and it was the first revision of that week (A).
Nether Quartz Ore is used to create the Redstone Daylight Sensor and the Redstone Comparator, also new blocks that will be entered into Minecraft on 1.5.0. Currently, I am testing this out on the 13w01A release as Minecraft 1.5.0 isn't released during this recording.
Nether Quarts Ore is discovered throughout the Nether rather abundantly, which means unlike ores like diamond or emerald, you can find them quite easily. Once you update to Minecraft 1.5.0, you'll have to travel to an undiscovered part of your nether to find Nether Quartz Ore. This ore is the first ore to be located in the Nether, which is making the nether more useful of a place to adventure in.
When mining Nether Quartz Ore, you gain experience and these can be mined using any pickaxe.
