Here is the design I use for hiding stuff in a Minecraft Factions world as a back up base/house.

*** May not be suitable for PVP / Factions.

The lava cover is usually enough to stop xrayers (x-ray mod) from finding it, and it's buried deep enough for people to not see it from below. When strip miners and most everybody hit lava and go around.
